Work begins on site

February 20, 2017

At the start of this year, conservation work began on site at Llanthony Secunda Priory. A landmark moment for the trustees who have worked tirelessly for a decade to see the priory restored to its former glory, and brought back into use.

Following the appointment of Croft Building and Conservation Ltd as the main contractor, conservation and restoration work started on site in January 2017. The work is expected to take 18 months to complete. Much of the initial work focusses on groundworks and establishing drainage and services. This is being accompanied by a watching brief from the archaeologists.

Expressing his delight, the Chair of the Trust, Jeremy Williamson said:
“The start on site represents a significant milestone for the Trust and is the culmination of several years’ effort.  I would particularly like to thank our funders, local sponsors and volunteers who have made this possible”.

The £4m Re-formation Project, supported by a Heritage Lottery Fund grant of £3.1m, will see the restoration of the two main buildings, allowing them to be used for the first time by both the Trust engaging the local community, and by Gloucestershire College, together with an improved landscape and environment.
